It’s Dublin, Ireland, in the 19th century and middle-aged Albert Nobbs is a waiter with a difference. In the movie, Albert goes to visit Hubert and his wife, whereas in the book she does not. The film received mixed reviews, but the performances by Glenn Close and Janet McTeer were praised; they were nominated for the Academy Award in the categories of Best Actress and Best Supporting Actressrespectively.

With its stifling form and heavy reliance on all to convenient coincidence, Albert Nobbs reads as a story that would do quite well as either a play or a film. I can’t figure out if he’s the greatest minor writer or the worst major writer of his time.

Societies treatment of gender Albert wouldn’t even be considered for her job as a woman. I think part of the reason for this was its layout, with speech being in text and not separated, it made the reader feel almost overwhelmed by the information coming off the page. Aside from the problem with the digital version, this short, page novella is a nice, easy, and fast read.

Then after one chance encounter everything changes. Therefore, the book lacked that wonderful personality and depth of character that came from actress Janet McTeer’s ‘Hugo’ not to mention more scenes between Albert and Hugo which were geoge heartwarming and sad.
